Paul Roetzer
Paul Roetzer is on a mission to accelerate AI literacy, and human-centered AI transformation in organizations.
As the founder and CEO of SmarterX and Marketing AI Institute, he is the driving force behind some of the AI industry's leading events and educational content, including his monthly Intro to AI class that has taught more than 40,000 registrants since its launch in October 2021.
He is the creator of the Marketing AI Conference (MAICON) and AI Academy by SmarterX, and he regularly shares his insights as co-host of the popular podcast, The Artificial Intelligence Show.
Through his work as an author, keynote speaker and AI Academy instructor, Roetzer directly trains the next generation of AI-forward professionals and leaders.
A graduate of Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Roetzer has consulted for hundreds of organizations throughout his career, helping them navigate technological change and build smarter businesses. Previously, he was the founder and CEO of HubSpot’s first partner agency, PR 20/20, a digital marketing firm that he sold in 2021.
His unique background as both an entrepreneur and a pioneering marketing agency leader gives him a practical, story-driven approach to helping professionals and businesses apply AI to reimagine business models, reinvent industries, and rethink what's possible.

Cathy McPhillips is Chief Marketing Officer at SmarterX, the parent brand of Marketing AI Institute, where she leads marketing, brand, and communications strategy across the organization’s media, events, and education divisions—including flagship initiatives like MAICON (Marketing AI Conference) and AI Academy for Marketers. In her role, Cathy helps executives, marketers, and educators navigate and accelerate their AI transformation journeys by connecting them with trusted knowledge, practical training, and visionary thought leadership.
Cathy has been recognized as a Folio: Top Women in Media, a MarTechExec Woman You Need to Know in Martech, and a 2024 Crain’s Cleveland Business Notable Leader in Communications. She has served as an Ohio University Jerry L. Sloan Visiting Professional in Public Relations and remains actively engaged in mentoring and speaking with students and professionals at the intersection of marketing, technology, and AI innovation. Cathy currently serves on the Executive Advisory Board for Ohio University’s College of Business and has held executive board positions with Community of Hope, the Orange Effect Foundation, and the OU College of Business Professional Advisory Board, reflecting her deep commitment to education, access, and community impact.
